Let’s First Respond to Tragedy with Support

Victor Fornari, MD

In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, the world asks, “Why?” Such violence transcends our capacity to understand it, especially because so many victims were innocent young children.

Every day, new bits of data — sometimes unsubstantiated — emerge about the alleged shooter and his primary relationships. At this point, it’s too early to speculate on his motives.

We would do well to refrain from trying to hypothesize how this could happen, but focus on healing instead. It is critical to support and reassure children and their families, and serve as models of strength and courage. Please remember that counseling or support is available for families and individuals who need help.

Joint Commission Praises North Shore-LIJ Hospitals

Jeremy Boal, MD

Three out of eight of the Joint Commission’s “Top Hospitals” in New York State are within the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Not bad for the first year that The Joint Commission has created such a designation. And quite a few of our other health system hospitals came very close to making the list.

For those who are curious about how a facility becomes a Joint Commission Top Hospital, it requires excelling in providing all the evidence-based elements of care to patients with certain conditions such as heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. Kudos to North Shore University, Plainview and Southside hospitals. You folks are amazing.

Unwanted Rx Drug Drop-Off Day: Eliminate Abuse Before It Starts

Lisa Burch

Earlier this year, four people were murdered when a husband and wife addicted to painkillers robbed a pharmacy on Long Island. That event illustrated just how serious the “hidden” problem of prescription drug addiction has become.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, the usual methods for disposing of unused medicines--flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash--both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Periodically, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) provides the public with an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Last April, Americans turned in 376,593 pounds—188 tons—of prescription drugs at nearly 5,400 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local partners.

On October 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can bring your medications for disposal to one of 16 North Shore-LIJ Health System locations throughout Long Island and New York City. Full Post - to Detail View
