Hofstra North Shore-LIJ Hematology and Oncology Fellowship

The long standing independent fellowship training programs in hematology and medical oncology at both North Shore University Hospital (North Shore) and Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) were merged in 2010, as the core internal medicine programs were joined as one. North Shore and LIJ are both tertiary care teaching facilities and two of the cornerstones of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. With a service area encompassing Long Island and metropolitan New York City, the North Shore-LIJ Health System has become the nation's second-largest non-profit, secular healthcare system and one of the country's largest clinically integrated healthcare networks. Embedded in the North Shore-LIJ Health System is the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University.

The goal of the North Shore-LIJ hematology and oncology fellowship program is to develop physicians who will provide excellent and compassionate cancer care. We aspire to educate and train clinical oncologists who will utilize the professional, cognitive and the technical skills necessary to provide their patients with the highest quality of care.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s hematology/oncology program has participated for several decades in National Cancer Institute-sponsored clinical trials and has been identified as the repository of state-of-the-art clinical research protocols for both treatment and cancer control on Long Island. As such, the health system is identified as one of the major diagnostic and treatment centers for patients with malignant disease residing in the New York metropolitan area.

The Monter Cancer Center houses our cancer services and include pain and palliative care programs, nutrition counseling, social work and support services, a patient education center and a nationally recognized clinical trials program. The Monter Cancer Center is part of the Center for Advanced Medicine and also incorporates urology (Smith Institute for Urology), a large and comprehensive diagnostic imaging center, ambulatory surgery and women's health services. Expansion of the center is currently underway and will include the addition of multidisciplinary teams in gynecologic oncology and neuro-oncology, among other disciplines and services.
