The Hematologic Malignancy Service at North Shore–LIJ offers state-of -the-art diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Our physicians are experts in their fields and have excellent regional, national and even international reputations. The Cancer Institute’s position as a main member institution in the cutting-edge National Cancer Institute-sponsored cooperative research program, “Cancer and Acute Leukemia Group B (CALGB)”, gives our patients access to the most current treatment approaches available. Our designation as a Community Clinical Oncology Program makes additional sponsored trials available to our patients. Furthermore, the Institute also participates in many phase 1 and phase 2 drug trials utilizing the latest novel approaches to treatment. These trials are often conceived and developed by our own physicians.
The Hematologic Malignancy Service also incorporates the Human Progenitor Stem Cell Program at North Shore University Hospital. This program offers both autologous (self-donated) and allogeneic (matched from a related or unrelated donor) peripheral and bone marrow stem cell transplants as potentially creative therapies for many hematologic disorders. The unit is a member of the National Marrow Donor Program as a Transplant Center and Collection Center.
Our Institute is one of the largest acute leukemia treatment centers in the nation. We have been designated a “Myelodysplastic Syndrome Center of Excellence” by the Myelodysplastic Syndrome Foundation. In chronic lymphocytic leukemia, our basic science research program led by Dr. Nicholas Chiorazzi and clinical therapeutic trials program under the leadership of Dr. Kanti Rai, are models in their field and enjoy an international reputation for excellence.
