The Division of Surgical Oncology has 16 surgeons on the active staff who are board certified and fellowship trained in cancer surgery. The specialists in the division are experts in the management of rare and complex tumors requiring sophisticated techniques as well as the more common malignancies. A multimodality approach to the management of tumors is utilized which includes surgery and when appropriate radiation and chemotherapy. Several thousand operative procedures for cancer are done annually in the outpatient and inpatient surgical units. Cutting edge technology which includes sentinal node biopsy and cryotherapy is available.Clinical research protocols are provided to patients within the division through collaboration with CALGB. Members of the division are responsible for the education of surgical residents and have trained other practicing surgeons in the management of cancer. Educational efforts coordinated by the division include surgical tumor board, head and neck conference, and multimodality breast meetings. The division also provides surgeons for speaking engagements at various community educational events.
