Frequently Asked Questions

What is the North Shore-LIJ Ambulatory Surgery Center?

The North Shore-LIJ Ambulatory Surgery Center is a world-class, out-of-the-hospital option for outpatient surgery  conveniently located near major Long Island thoroughfares. It offers the highest quality outpatient surgery technology and practices of the North Shore-LIJ Health System in one brand-new facility. The center features state-of-the-art operating rooms, recovery areas and a pre-surgical testing suite. The 23,000-square-foot facility also has convenient free parking and a spacious waiting area for adults and children.

Why was it created?

The center was created in recognition of the unique nature of ambulatory surgery and the growing need for it in the community. Patients living in Queens or Nassau County have an impressive new outpatient facility close to home in addition to our Alvin and Dorothy Schwartz Ambulatory Surgery Center at North Shore University Hospital.

What is an ambulatory surgery center?

An ambulatory surgery center is a specialized outpatient facility where patients undergo surgical procedures without having to be admitted to a hospital. Patients leave the same day they are treated - usually within a few hours. In general, patients walk into the operating room and upon recovery walk out escorted by a family member or loved one.

What clinical services does the center offer?

The center provides adults and children with outpatient surgical expertise in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), gynecology, urology, orthopedics and general surgery. It features comprehensive services, including pre-surgical testing, support and recovery rooms, and four state-of-the art operating rooms (ORs) housed in a modern and comfortable building with easy parking for patients. Eventually, the number of ORs will be expanded to six or eight.

Are there labs onsite or will I have to take a lab test elsewhere?

Laboratory services are done offsite at a health system laboratory.

Where do I park? Do you have a drop-off/pick-up area for patients?

There are specially marked parking areas close to the entrance for patients that are free. A side entrance has wheelchair accessibility.

Do you have extended hours?

Our hours of operation are as follows:

Operating Rooms: Monday – Friday 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit: Monday – Friday 6:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Pre-Surgical Testing: Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

How do I know if my healthcare plan covers ambulatory surgery?

Please call 516-734-8000 to check about your insurance coverage.

Do you offer a payment plan for the portion that my health insurance does not cover?

The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System’s number one goal is to provide high-quality, compassionate care to every patient who comes to one of our facilities, regardless of their ability to pay. Fear of a hospital bill should never stop anyone from getting necessary medical care.

If you do not have health insurance and worry that you may be unable to pay your hospital bill in full, it is important that you let us know – we may be able to help. Based on your income, assets, family size and medical needs, you may qualify for services at reduced fees through the North Shore-LIJ’s Financial Assistance Program.

The program assists uninsured patients earning up to three times the federal poverty level who do not qualify for publicly subsidized health insurance and cannot afford to pay the cost of their medical care. North Shore-LIJ’s facilities will reduce the fees for eligible patients seeking inpatient, outpatient, ancillary, ambulatory, primary, specialty or emergency care.
