The purpose of this Visitor Guide is to provide you and your family members with information about care and treatment at The Zucker Hillside Hospital. We hope that you will find this brief description of the program helpful in answering the many questions that are sure to arise. Please do not hesitate to ask our staff any additional questions you may have. We are committed to providing the best care possible.

Treatment Team

A multi-disciplinary team will coordinate and implement your care. Your team consists of:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Social workers
  • Nurses
  • Mental health workers
  • Psychiatric aides
  • Rehabilitation or activity therapists
  • Nutritionists
  • Pharmacists

The Zucker Hillside Hospital is a short-term acute-care psychiatric hospital. The goal of treatment is to sufficiently resolve the symptoms of your psychiatric disorder in order to support your returning home at the earliest opportunity.

 

You will be asked upon admission about any special needs, such as religious/spiritual, dietary, cultural, pain management, etc., that you may have. We will attempt to accommodate you in every way possible.

 


Telephone

Patients have access to at least one public telephone, which is located in the hallway of each unit. Telephones may be utilized for incoming and outgoing calls between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Patients are requested to be considerate of their peers by limiting calls to a maximum of ten minutes each, and to discourage outside callers from calling beyond the designated hours. If you require additional privacy when making or receiving a call, please advise staff of the specific need and they will make the necessary accommodation.


 

Visiting Hours

Visiting is considered an important part of your treatment and your privacy is promoted as much as possible. If you have concerns about visiting or issues of confidentiality during visiting hours, please notify the nursing staff in advance.

Monday to Friday 9-10 a.m. (except AP Unit) 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, Holidays 1-4 p.m. (except AP & Kaufmann) 7-8 p.m. (except Kaufmann)
AP Visiting (weekdays) 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m., 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-8 p.m.
Kaufmann Visiting (seven days a week) 4-5 p.m. and 6-7 p.m.


 

Safety During Visiting

Some articles or implements that are commonly used may not be safe within a psychiatric unit, when accessible to patients. For safety reasons, all items brought to the hospital for a patient by a visitor must first be checked by the nursing staff.

In addition, we are committed to a healthy eating program. Some foods may interact with prescribed medications. For the purpose of limiting unnecessary weight gain that commonly occurs during hospitalization, food items may not be brought into the inpatient unit until discussed with a nurse or doctor.

Potentially dangerous items that can be used as weapons are not permitted anywhere on The Zucker Hillside Hospital campus.

To protect the confidentiality of patients, visitors are not permitted to bring cameras, cell phones, or tape recorders within the clinical areas of the hospital.

Useful items to bring to the hospital:

  • Shaving Cream
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Toiletries
  • Disposable shavers
  • Underwear
  • Soap in a soap dish
  • Shampoo
  • Comb
  • Brush
  • Deodorant
  • Robe (without a belt, only)
  • Pajamas
  • Slippers
  • Changes in clothing and outerwear (according to weather conditions)

A washing machine, dryer, and detergent are available free of charge on each of the inpatient units. If you use dentures, please bring adhesive and cleaner. A denture container will be provided. If you wear eyeglasses, please bring them and label them. If you use a hearing aid, please bring extra batteries.

Although we encourage families to bring patients' eyeglasses, hearing aids and dentures for their comfort, please be aware that the hospital cannot take responsibility for their loss when they are in the possession of the patient.

Options by Car:
  • Long Island Expressway, south on Little Neck Parkway; left on Union Turnpike to 263rd Street; left two blocks.
  • Grand Central - Northern State Parkway, Exit at Lakeville Road but continue to Union Turnpike, make a right on Union Turnpike to 263rd St., make a right for two blocks.
  • Union Turnpike - Eastbound Make left at 263rd St; proceed two blocks to entrance.
  • Northern Boulevard Turn south onto Lakeville Road; turn right onto Union Turnpike to 263rd St; turn right on 263rd St. for two blocks.

By Subway & Bus to The Zucker Hillside Hospital

IND "E" or "F" train to the Union Turnpike (Kew Gardens) express station, (25 mins from Times Square). Use last car of the train and leave the station via the 78th Ave exit. Take the City Line Q46-(LIJ Hospital/Lake Success) bus to the last stop at the LIJ Medical Center; leave bus on Union Turnpike at 263rd St. Walk North two blocks to the entrance of The Zucker Hillside Hospital.

The North Shore Towers Express Bus to and from Manhattan operates 7 days a week and stops at Union Turnpike and 260th and 265th St a few blocks from The Zucker Hillside Hospital and also stops at the Medical Center bus stop on Lakeville Road. Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority (Queens and Nassau) - Weekdays Rush Hour Service:

Route N26 Jamaica-Manhasset via Hillside Ave, Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park Road, Community Drive:

Eastbound - Buses depart Jamaica (165th St/Jamaica Bus Terminal) at 7:07am terminating at Great Neck LIRR Station and at 7:44am and 7:57am (terminating at Community Drive, Manhasset). At other times, take Route N22/22A Jamaica - Roosevelt Field - Hicksville and transfer to Route N25 Lynbrook - Great Neck at New Hyde Park Road and Hillside Ave, New Hyde Park

Westbound - Buses depart Community Drive, Manhasset, at 4:30pm and 4:40pm and terminate in Jamaica (165th St/Jamaica Bus Terminal). At other times, take Route N25 Great Neck - Lynbrook and transfer to Route N22/22A at Hillside Ave and New Hyde Park Road, New Hyde Park.

Route N25 Lynbrook - Great Neck via New Hyde Park Road:

Northbound - Buses depart Lynbrook LIRR Station
Weekdays, 5:55am - 7:45pm;
Saturdays, 6:45am - 6:45pm;
Sundays, 10:45am - 6:15pm.

Southbound - Buses depart Great Neck LIRR Station
Weekdays, 6:45am - 8:45pm;
Saturdays, 7:45am - 6:45pm;
Sundays, 10:45am - 6:15pm.
