Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in which malignant cells are found in the lining of the chest or abdomen. Exposure to airborne asbestos particles increases one's risk of developing malignant mesothelioma.

As with all types of cancer, the Cancer Institute at North Shore-LIJ takes a multidisciplinary approach to treat patients with mesothelioma. The treatment team consists of surgical oncologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, pulmonary specialist and pathologist, who work together to provide the highest quality of care for the diagnosis, treatment and support to people with mesothelioma.
