Mammography

A mammogram is a low dose x-ray of the breast.  It is important to know that mammograms are not perfect, as approximately 10-15 percent of breast cancers will not be seen on a mammogram.  However, when used in conjunction with regular breast exams by your doctor and breast self-examination, mammograms can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages when it can best be treated.

In preparation for your mammogram, please:

  • Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam as these can mimic calcifications on the mammogram.
  • If prior mammograms were performed at another facility, you should obtain your prior mammograms and reports and bring them with you at the time of the current exam.
