Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation (x-ray). It is safe for use even on pregnant women. High-resolution ultrasound scans are obtained by registered trained technologists and interpreted by physicians who specialize in breast imaging. Ultrasound can be used as a focused exam to evaluate a patient with a mass, pain, or discharge. Breast ultrasound is extremely valuable in determining whether a lump or mass is a fluid-filled cyst or solid tissue. Alternatively, breast ultrasound is also utilized as a survey technique in order to further screen women with dense breasts and who are at high risk for breast cancer. Ultrasound provides information that is different and often complementary to the mammogram.
