About Me
Louis R. Kavoussi, MD is Chairman of Urology for the North Shore-LIJ Health System and Professor of Urology (clinical) at New York University School of Medicine. He is an expert in urological diseases and a world-renowned authoritative surgeon in minimally invasive approaches to the treatment of these conditions. Dr. Kavoussi has pioneered several new operative techniques, including the laparoscopic nephrectomy for cancer and live renal transplant, and was part of the team that performed the first laparoscopic prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer. He has extensive experience with minimally invasive approaches to treat renal obstruction, kidney stones and testicular cancer and his research contributions have focused on making surgery less painful, precise and safer using novel techniques such as medical robotics and telemedicine. Dr. Kavoussi has received numerous awards recognizing his contributions to the field of urologic surgery, including the Golden Cystoscope Award bestowed by the American Urologic Association to the individual who has most helped advance the field within ten years of completing their residency and a Lifetime Achievement Award before the age of 50 from the National Kidney Foundation for his pioneering work in minimally invasive renal surgery. Dr. Kavoussi is an editor of Campbell's Urology, a leading text in the field, and an editor of the American Urological Association Update Series, a monthly publication reviewing the latest innovations in urology. He is also a member of the Society of Genitourinary Surgeons, an elite group of urologists.
