North Shore-LIJ’s Cynthia L. Harden, MD Co-Edits Book Epilepsy in Women

Epilepsy in Women

MANHASSET, NY

Cynthia L. Harden, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s chief, division of epilepsy and electroencephalography and director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center at North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), has co-edited a book Epilepsy in Women, published in March by Wiley-Blackwell.  Internationally recognized authorities contributed to the book, providing expertise in caring for women with epilepsy.

The chapters provide detailed reviews and case discussions of evaluation and management of concerns for women with epilepsy.  The topics include seizure occurrence during pregnancy, use of birth control, hormonal influences on seizures during the menstrual cycle, and perimenopausal and menopausal effects on epilepsy.

“There are specific concerns for women with epilepsy at various epochs of life,” said Dr. Harden.  “From puberty to pregnancy and menopause, providing care for a woman with epilepsy involves additional consideration, monitoring, and counseling.”

In Epilepsy in Women, Dr. Harden, along with co-editors, Sanjeev V. Thomas, MD and Torbjorn Tomson, MD, address the hormonal changes women experience throughout their lifetime and provide a detailed guide to encompass all aspects of a woman’s life including social and psychological impacts, the impact of reproductive life, contraception, pregnancy, fetal health and long-term developmental outcomes, lactation, and menopause.

Using case studies and offering scientifically-grounded guidance and recommendations, Epilepsy in Women serves as a crucial guide for all of the neurologists and gynecologists worldwide who participate in the management of women who live with epilepsy.
