Jamie S. Ullman, MD, FACS, Appointed as Director of Neurotrauma at North Shore University Hospital
North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI) today announced that Jamie S. Ullman, MD, FACS, has been appointed director of neurotrauma of North Shore University Hospital and associate professor of neurosurgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
For the past 17 years, Dr. Ullman served as director, department of neurosurgery at the Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, NY, and as associate professor of neurosurgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ. Dr. Ullman completed her residencies in surgery and neurosurgery, as well as a fellowship in neurosurgical critical care at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In addition, she completed a research fellowship in neurotrauma at the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Dr. Ullman’s clinical interests include neurosurgical critical care, traumatic brain injury and neurotrauma, in addition to other brain and spinal disorders, adult hydrocephalus and trigeminal neuralgia. She has spoken and has been a panel member at various professional conferences regarding guidelines for the management of severe traumatic brain injury; improving disaster response in the U.S. and the role of the trauma system; and, the future of emergency surgical care in the U.S.
She has received numerous accolades, including the “Physician Recognition Award” by the Shareing & Careing Organization; the “Queens Person of the Week” by NY1 News for her involvement with the Pedestrian Injury Awareness Campaign; and she received the AANS Leadership Scholarship. Dr. Ullman has authored papers and commentary in prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery, as well as numerous book chapters related to neurotrauma and critical care.
Dr. Ullman is currently chair-elect for the AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care. She served as vice president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, president of the Congress of American Neurosurgical Education and president of Women in Neurosurgery. She serves as a neurosurgeon specialist on the New York State Trauma Advisory Committee and on the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.
