Evaluation and Counseling
Our licensed social worker, Diane Padernacht, is a vital part of the interdisciplinary team and has a particular expertise in understanding the impact of epilepsy on patients and their families. Patients with epilepsy may experience issues that impact other areas of their lives. Psychotherapy is implemented to increase particular individual’s sense of their own well being. Medical history is reviewed and plans are facilitated to accomplish goals. Our Nurse Practitioner, Deborah Risbrook, plays an integral role and provides care and education for patients and families. She also acts as a liaison for patients who are seeking therapies, including epilepsy surgery, and who may benefit from counseling. Risbrook provides aid for patients' decision making process, as well as emotional support.
Some of the support services provided are:
- Crisis intervention
- Referral to community services including vocational, special education programs
- Services at home including home health aides
- Individual counseling
- Marriage/family issues counseling
- Financial/medical insurance issues
- Referrals to fight discrimination; advocacy groups
Our neuropsychiatrists, Adarsh Gupta, MD and Robert Martin, MD, provide extensive routine psychiatric evaluation for our patients to diagnose and treat epilepsy patients suffering from anxiety, depression, psychogenic seizures and/or other psychological concerns.
The epilepsy support group is held once a month to help adults with epilepsy improve their quality of life, share their experiences, socialize, and empower their sense of self.
