Over the course of one year, the Emergency Medicine Department at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream, Long Island, NY, sees approximately 43,000 patients. One of the most advanced emergency medicine departments in the region, it is staffed by all board-certified/board-eligible emergency physicians, dedicated emergency medicine nurses and certified physician assistants 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Franklin Hospital provides a full range of services, including orthopaedics, wound care, pain management, psychiatry, hospice and ambulatory surgery. We also have a 21-bed short-term psychiatric unit.

Our Emergency Medicine Department provides many advanced programs to ensure that our patients get state-of-the-art care for virtually any illness or injury:

• Stroke Center Certified by New York State – The Emergency Medicine Department at Franklin Hospital has the most advanced training, personnel and equipment to provide state-of-the-art care to patients suffering from ischemic strokes (the most common type) and hemorrhagic strokes. Receiving expert treatment for strokes can mean the difference between life and death.

Franklin Hospital is one of 11 hospitals in North Shore-LIJ Health System to receive the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Awards. We were recognized for achieving 85 percent or higher adherence to all Stroke Performance indicators for 12 consecutive months. In 2010, our hospital received their Gold Plus Award.

• Level II Trauma Center – This designation means that Franklin Hospital's Emergency Medicine Department has physician specialists such as neurosurgeons, pulmonologists, intensivists, trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists and orthopaedists on call 24/7 to provide immediate state-of-the-art care to all trauma patients, including those involved in serious accidents. Other features of a Level II trauma center are the presence of an in-house lab, as well advanced life support immediately available on air, 911 and long-distance transport.

• Separate Fast Track Unit – The fast track unit at Franklin Hospital's Emergency Medicine Department allows patients with minor illnesses or injuries to be treated rapidly in an environment appropriate to the severity of their illness. Open daily from 11am to 11pm, our 7-bed unit is staffed by an attending emergency physician and attending doctors, residents, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. 

• 911 Receiving Hospital – The Emergency Department is a 911 receiving hospital for both police and voluntary ambulance services in Nassau County and FDNY from New York City.
