Over the course of one year, the Emergency Medicine Department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY, sees approximately 100,000 patients (70,000 adults and 30,000 children). As a designated tertiary care center, we care for the most complicated cases, as well as routine emergency and urgent care patients. Our facilities are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Our Emergency Department provides many advanced programs to ensure that our patients get state-of-the-art care for virtually any illness or injury:
- Stroke Center Certified by New York State – The Emergency Medicine Department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center has the most advanced training, personnel and equipment to provide state-of-the-art care to patients suffering from ischemic strokes (the most common type) and hemorrhagic strokes. Receiving expert treatment for strokes can mean the difference between life and death.
Long Island Jewish Medical Center is one of 11 hospitals in North Shore-LIJ Health System to receive the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Awards. The awards recognize the hospitals' commitment and successes in implementing a higher standard of stroke care to ensure that stroke patients receive treatment in accordance with the latest evidence-based guidelines.
- Level I Pediatric and Level II Adult Trauma Center – These designations mean that the experienced surgeons at Long Island Jewish Medical Center's Emergency Medicine Department represent all the necessary surgical subspecialties to provide immediate state-of-the-art care to all trauma patients.
- Separate Pediatric Emergency Department – Our separate emergency department provides a pleasant child-friendly environment to treat our pediatric patients with the specialized care they deserve. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our 17-bed facility is staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians.
- Separate Fast Track Unit – The fast track unit at Long Island Jewish Medical Center allows patients with minor illnesses or injuries to be treated rapidly in an environment appropriate to the severity of their illness. Open daily from 9am to midnight, our 8-bed unit is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and physician assistants.
- Separate Behavioral Health Unit – Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our behavioral health unit allows privacy and specialty psychiatric care for patients who need emergency mental health services. Our six-bed facility is staffed by adult and pediatric emergency physicians, psychiatrists and social workers.
- Academic Tertiary Care Center – This designation means that you can expect the highest quality emergency care available from experts who are renowned in their fields. Our senior physicians participate in scholarly research activities, teach at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and provide supervision for doctors in training (residents).
