Pediatric Emergency Medicine


The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York is located on Long Island in New Hyde Park, NY, and is a regional level 1 pediatric trauma center with approximately 37,000 visits per year. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department is staffed with 20 board-certified and eligible pediatric emergency medicine specialists and nurses trained to care for pediatric patients. The pediatric emergency room at Cohen Children’s Medical Center is specially designed to cater to the needs of infants through adolescents and is equipped to handle a full spectrum of conditions from simple injuries to cardiopulmonary arrest. Child life specialists are available to comfort and prepare children for medical procedures by conversing with them and entertaining them with coloring books and other multimedia resources.

If needed, specialty services such as pediatric surgery, plastic surgery and orthopaedic evaluations are available 24 hours a day. A state-of-the-art 36-bed Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department is currently under construction and scheduled to open in early 2013.

Our pediatric emergency medicine services have expanded to many of our sister hospitals within North Shore-LIJ Health System. All pediatric emergency rooms are staffed with board-certified and eligible pediatric emergency medicine physicians and are equipped to offer special care for infants and children.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program
Our fully accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship program takes advantage of the vast resources of Cohen Children's Medical Center by emphasizing clinical medicine, teaching, research and administration. Fellowship training provides a variety of rotations including: orthopaedics, ENT, gynecology, ophthalmology, toxicology, anesthesia, critical care, trauma, adult emergency medicine and an ongoing course in research design.

The overall goal of the three-year pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program at Cohen Children's Medical Center is to provide progressive experience in all aspects of the subspecialty. It is expected that during the program, fellows will become clinically proficient in the practice of pediatric emergency medicine, with emphasis on the acutely ill and injured child. They will also become competent in teaching other professionals, health care providers and families about appropriate topics in their field of expertise.
