SANE Program

The SANE Program (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program) at North Shore-LIJ Health System's North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, Long Island, NY, provides victims of rape and sexual assault with expert, confidential medical care and emotional support.

The SANE Program is located in a separate area of North Shore University Hospital's Emergency Department, specifically designed for interviewing, examining, treating, counseling and comforting adult victims of rape and sexual assault. The center consists of a private entrance, sitting room, examination room and bathroom, including shower. Together, a physician and a SANE nurse (trained in the examination of adult sexual assault victims) provide medical assistance, emotional support and information. SANE Follows U.S. Justice Department Guidelines
According to the SANE Program Development and Operation Guide, developed by U.S. Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crimes, the drive to develop high-quality SANE programs began with nurses, other medical professionals, counselors and advocates working with rape victims in hospitals, clinics and other settings. "These individuals," the Guide states, "recognized that services to sexual assault victims were inadequate and not at the same high standard of care as for other ED [emergency department] clients." Often, unprofessional treatment served to further traumatize the victims.

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program at North Shore University Hospital is one of a growing number of SANE programs across the United States that follows the federal guidelines recommended by the U.S. Justice Department for victims of sexual assault.
