In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, the world asks, “Why?” Such violence transcends our capacity to understand it, especially because so many victims were innocent young children.
Every day, new bits of data — sometimes unsubstantiated — emerge about the alleged shooter and his primary relationships. At this point, it’s too early to speculate on his motives.
We would do well to refrain from trying to hypothesize how this could happen, but focus on healing instead. It is critical to support and reassure children and their families, and serve as models of strength and courage.
