Diabetes association gives annual alert to public of diabetes risk

March 19, 2010
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is sending out an "alert" on March 23 to millions of people who may have diabetes and not know it.

"It's not our birthday. It's not our anniversary. It's our wake-up call," states the campaign for the 22nd annual ADA Alert Day. As many as 57 million Americans – including two million adolescents – could be at risk for type 2 diabetes, which can be managed successfully with dietary and lifestyle changes.

Just as important is the ADA's estimate that nearly 6 million people probably have diabetes and do not know it. Added to those who have been diagnosed, that brings the total number of American children and adults with diabetes up to about 24 million, as of 2007.

The ADA also estimates that 1.6 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year. The alert campaign is aimed at informing people of their risk and taking steps to prevent the disease with proper nutrition and exercise.
