One of our sustainability and social responsibility (SSR) goals is to harness the energy and commitment of the more than 45,000 North Shore-LIJ employees by engaging them in SSR initiatives to help build a culture of sustainability and social responsibility. We want to help build commitment to the values of environmental stewardship, inclusion and volunteerism so that our employees can become advocates for change in their own families and communities. It will help us retain the best staff and provide the best care for our patients.
Diversity and Inclusion
Recognizing the importance of being sensitive to the different needs and expectations of the communities it serves, North Shore-LIJ is enhancing its diversity awareness, inclusion and health literacy efforts to ensure that race, ethnicity and language are not deterring residents from accessing healthcare services. The more the health system, its employees and business partners represent the fabric of the community, the better the health system can address the needs of patients. Our Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy partnered with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and launched its own Dignity & Respect Campaign to advance cultural and linguistic competence and promote effective communication to enhance patient outcomes and eliminate health disparities.

Human Resources Goes Paperless
North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to enhancing technology and productivity has spread to Human Resources with the introduction of employee self-service, a new technology that has helped shift North Shore-LIJ away from relying on paper processes to serve employees’ needs better. It eliminated millions of paper files including printed paystubs. Additional Human Resources processes will also go paperless over the next few years, not only saving trees, but also improving customer service and operating efficiencies. Our paperless approach will make things much easier for employees and dramatically change the way we do business internally.Back to Top
