Community Healthy Cooking Classes

Southside Hospital

School-Based Physical Activity and Nutrition Programs
Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center / Kohl’s Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Program
The program is designed to help prevent childhood obesity using a multifaceted approach. The hospital will work with school districts and implement the following components: introduce the Active Kids Program, a year-long fitness and nutrition initiative; offer outreach to parents and caregivers to educate families about healthier food choices and ways to stay fit; implement a “bring your parents to school day,” in which parents are given counseling and will have the chance to exercise with their kids; and counsel school staff regarding healthy eating choices throughout the school day.

 


Activity Works
Activity Works is a plug-and-play school-based physical activity program that represents a significant advancement in enabling elementary-school educators to apply kinetic learning methods, which improve students’ academic focus and increase physical activity. The program was developed by North Shore-LIJ Health System with feedback from school administrators, educators, public health and pediatric obesity experts. It was principally created for classroom use, but educators report they are also successfully using Activity Works in physical education class, morning line-up, breakfast clubs, recess, assemblies and after-school programs. Activity Works is appropriate for elementary students in grades 1-3.

 

Activity Works consists of professionally produced audio and video adventures that lead students through carefully crafted 10-minute learning modules, which combine physical activity with cognitive learning in the classroom. These “activity adventures” are designed to cover the subjects being taught, providing simultaneous academic review, intellectual stimulation and physical activity. The students move and exercise along with fun, curriculum-based adventures, following a lively narrator’s directions, as well as visual cues. Healthy nutrition messages are also woven into the adventures.

All Activity Works adventures utilize a proprietary Kinetic ProtocolTM to provide students with optimal aerobic benefit using age-appropriate exercise and movements in each 10-minute episode. These features were researched and developed with the guidance of clinical and education experts, making Activity Works a new and unique physical activity solution to address childhood obesity issues, as well as academic and physical education needs, in elementary schools.

Activity Works’ video and audio adventures are packaged in a fully loaded toolkit of materials to help the teacher incorporate the program into the school day, and share valuable health information with students’ families as well. The Activity Works toolkit features a teacher lesson guide aligned to subject and physical-education standards. Teachers also receive a classroom reward system for students, plus parent newsletters that bring the healthy lifestyle messages of Activity Works home to the family.

Senior Exercise Program: Stepping On
Maintaining one’s health and independence are important parts of healthy aging. Falls and fall injuries are more common than strokes and can result in health problems that are just as serious. Stepping On is a well researched fall and injury prevention program. The group program meets for two hours a week for seven weeks. Each session includes simple and fun balance and strength training. The program is free.

During the course of the program, you will learn:

    • Simple and fun balance and strength training
    • The role vision plays in helping you maintain balance
    • How medications can contribute to falls
    • Ways to stay safe when out and about in your community
    • What to look for in safe footwear
    • How to check your home for safety

Who leads the program?
The program is co-led by a health professional and a community member. North Shore-LIJ experts will also assist by providing information on exercise, vision, safety and medications.

    • Has had a fall in the past year or is fearful of falling
