Cervical Cancer

Cervical Cancer, Symptoms and Causes

Cervical cancer is a malignant disease of the cervix, or lower part of the uterus. Most cervical cancers begin in the cells lining the cervix (squamous), although cancer in the gland cells (adeno) of the cervix is becoming more common in young women. The exact cause of cervical cancer is not clear, though it is determined that the sexually transmitted infection human papillomavirus (HPV) plays a significant role.

Cervical cancer often develops slowly over a number of years, starting with pre-cancerous changes in the cells of the cervix. Routine Pap smears can catch these pre-cancerous changes before they develop into cancer. If the cancer progresses, symptoms can include vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain.

The Gynecologic Oncology Program at the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of  cervical cancers. Our medical experts include specialists in a multitude of disciplines such as Gynecologic Oncology, Medical Oncology, Oncology Nursing, Radiation Medicine, Social Work and Genetic Counseling.

Our physicians are full members of Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored organization that conducts and coordinates research in cancers of the female reproductive system. Patients will have the opportunity to participate in GOG Clinical Trials relevant to their particular condition. In addition to their doctors, clinical trial participants will be monitored by our research nurses and managers, effectively adding an extra layer of support to the care we provide.

Cervical Cancer Treatments

Treatment options for cervical cancer and other gynecologic cancers at the Cancer Institute include the latest in chemotherapeutic and biologic therapies and access to up-to-date clinical trials and innovative treatments, including:

  • Laparoscopic and robotically assisted cancer surgery
  • Chemotherapy (intravenous and intraperitoneal)
  • Hormone therapy
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), which allows for precise radiation doses to navigate to specific areas within the tumor through three-dimensional imaging
  • Fertility-sparing surgical techniques

Our experts at the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute are at the forefront of research in the early detection of ovarian cancer and uterine cancer and are involved in leading-edge programs in the prevention of cervical cancer through regular screenings and identification of women with pre-cancerous cervical lesions and papilloma virus infections.
