The North Shore-LIJ Health System is the proud recipient of the 2010 National Quality Healthcare Award from the National Quality Forum (NQF). Recognized for its ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, transparent, patient-centered healthcare, the health system is the first in the New York metropolitan area to receive this prestigious award.
NQF, which works to raise standards for healthcare, presents this annual award to an organization that is a national leader in delivering outstanding quality-driven healthcare. North Shore-LIJ was cited for successfully using performance measurement to drive quality improvement, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, and raising the bar of health system performance to deliver safe, effective and efficient care to the community it serves.
Quality care is a goal for every employee in the health system from the moment they are hired. Throughout the continuum of care, quality is measured so that patients can be assured of the most effective, efficient treatments. Among the initiatives that NQF cited as examples of the high value placed on quality were weekly post-discharge phone calls to heart failure patients and the hand-washing campaign. These programs have resulted in a significant decrease in cardiac readmissions and a huge jump in hand-washing compliance.
Michael Dowling accepted this high honor from his peers in the healthcare industry on behalf of every team member and in acknowledgement of North Shore-LIJ’s dedication to making quality care its top priority.Back to Top
