Not every unexpected medical situation warrants a visit to the hospital emergency room. Our UCCs are a convenient alternative to waiting for hours in an emergency department while critically injured patients are treated, or if the office of your regular physician is closed for the evening, weekend, or holiday.

For life-threatening situations, such as heart attack and stroke, patients should go to their local emergency department.

Our Urgent Care Center teams in Rego Park are trained to provide urgent, non-life-threatening medical care for you and your family when immediate healthcare assistance is required. Under the umbrella of North Shore-LIJ Health System, our board-certified emergency medicine physicians provide you with the highest quality care.

Our physicians are trained to provide a broad range of urgent medical services for patients of every age. In addition, we offer specialized testing and diagnostic services, including EKG, X-ray, ultrasound and laboratory testing.

What is the North Shore-LIJ Medical Group Urgent Care Center (UCC)?
A convenient solution for patients who have an injury or illness that requires immediate care but may not be serious enough to warrant a visit to an emergency department.

What is the wait time?
UCC patients are generally treated on a first-come, first-served basis. While every attempt will be made to see you as quickly as possible, wait times will be based on the number of people seeking care, as well as the seriousness of their condition. Our goal is to get patients in and out within an hour.

When should I use a UCC rather than an emergency department?
For life-threatening situations, go to your local emergency department. For minor illnesses and injuries, the best way to get the care you need more quickly is to go to come to the UCC at Manhattan.

How do I pay?
We accept many insurance plans and all forms of payment.

Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is necessary. Just walk in and receive prompt medical attention when you need it most. The UCC is a convenient alternative when:

  • You cannot schedule a timely appointment with your physician
  • Your condition is not serious enough to require a visit to the hospital emergency department
  • Your regular physician is on vacation or their office is closed

What about my regular physician?
A UCC does not take the place of your primary-care physician. Your personal physician coordinates care for you and your family. Urgent care functions as an alternative by providing attention to immediate problems that can be handled in an outpatient setting outside of usual office hours or when your regular physician’s schedule is full.

Who will care for me?
A board-certified emergency medicine–trained physician. Other UCC staff members will also be involved in your visit and will assist in providing excellent medical care in a compassionate, respectful manner within a warm, comforting environment.

What happens when I leave the UCC?
You will be given complete discharge instructions and notified about any abnormal lab work or X-rays. With your permission, a record of your treatment will also be faxed to your primary care physician, who can provide any necessary follow-up care.

What do I need to bring with me to my visit?
Your insurance card, identification and a list of prescribed and/or over-the-counter medications that you are currently taking.

Can the UCC physician be my primary care doctor?
Urgent care is not a primary care practice and is most appropriate for your immediate or episodic needs. Although most problems can be handled by a UCC, it is important for you to establish a long-term relationship with a physician who can monitor all aspects of your health. This is most important for those with complex or chronic conditions that are better managed by a primary care physician. Our urgent care practitioners will evaluate your needs and may refer you to a more appropriate level of care.

What does the UCC do if someone has a serious condition that requires more advanced care?
The UCC serves as an alternative starting point for access into the acute healthcare setting. The staff is trained to stabilize a patient with serious or life-threatening symptoms and to arrange for quick ambulance transportation to the hospital emergency department.

Can I get a refill on a prescription given to me at the UCC?
When a patient is given a prescription by one of our physicians, it is for the condition that was treated. The prescription will last a few days. If symptoms persist, patients should seek refills from their primary care physician. If that option is not available, then the patient will need to be re-evaluated by a UCC physician prior to providing any new prescriptions.

Can I get a refill on medication that was given to me by my primary care physician?
Since the UCC does not provide ongoing care and have an established relationship with you like your primary care physician, the UCC physician will need to evaluate you prior to prescribing any medications.

Where can I ask questions about charges on my EOB (Explanation of Benefits) or any statements I have received from the UCC?
Patients can contact our billing department. For a physician bill, please contact the NSLIJ Faculty Practice Plan at (516) 465-1901. For a bill from LIJMC, please call (516) 470-8610.

Are X-rays available?
Yes. We have X-ray facilities on site with X-ray technicians on staff.

Do your doctors have regular patients?
No. Our primary purpose is caring for patients with urgent and immediate medical care needs.

Does the UCC treat infants and children?
Our emergency medicine–trained physicians provide advanced medical care for the whole family, including infants with minor ailments.

What if I need to see a specialist?
The UCC physicians will ensure the best possible care, offer referrals for our patients and coordinate referrals to primary care physicians to specialists based on the needs of the patients.
