The North Shore-LIJ Health System will build on last summer’s success treating patients on Fire Island by opening a second immediate care center in Cherry Grove, the health system announced today.

Both facilities will be open to the public seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The immediate care centers will be staffed by a different physician, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner each week. The health professional will be on hand to treat the following ailments:

• Minor injuries and burns
• Sprains and strains
• Coughs, colds, sinus infections, cold sores and sore throats
• Allergic reactions
• Fevers and flu-like symptoms
• Rashes and skin irritations, including insect bites, poison ivy and poison oak
• Mild asthma
• Ear and eye infections
• Minor wounds and lacerations
• Stings, including jellyfish stings

The immediate care centers will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., when walk-in patients can be seen. When the clinician is not in the office, patients can call emergency numbers and police will direct patients to the appropriate medical care. The emergency numbers are 631-583-5866 for Ocean Beach and 631-854-8382 for Cherry Grove. The Ocean Beach immediate care center is at 504 Bayberry Walk and the Cherry Grove location is at 153 Doctor’s Walk on Fire Island.

For patients who might need a higher level of medical care, they can call the emergency numbers and will be taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

“Through these immediate care centers, people can receive medical care for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries without taking a ferry or otherwise disrupting their vacation, which is a great service to those on Fire Island,” said Winnie Mack, the health system’s eastern regional executive director.

“On behalf of the entire Cherry Grove community, I would like to welcome North Shore-LIJ to our island hamlet,” said Joanne Tavis, president of the Elmer Lindsay Memorial Center in Cherry Grove, the Cherry Grove Doctor’s Fund. “We are beyond thrilled to have you with us to help fill this critical need in our community.”
