Cardiologists and Staff Members at LIJ Medical Center “Go Red for Women” to Raise Awareness of Heart Disease

NEW HYDE PARK, NY -- Heart disease is the number-one killer of American women. Nearly a half million women die of heart disease each year, or five times the number of women who die from breast cancer. Every year since 1984, more American women than men have died of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and the gap is widening. In response, the American Heart Association launched a campaign called “Go Red for Women,” which was recognized on Friday, February 3rd with National Wear Red Day for Women.” The goal of this initiative is to prevent heart disease in women.
As a proud sponsor of Go Red For Women, the North Shore-LIJ Health System encouraged the combined staff of the Division of Cardiology at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center and pediatric cardiology at Cohen Children’s Medical Center to wear red. Nearly 100 staff members gathered at LIJ on Feb. 3 to recognize the threat of CVD and so help better the chances of overcoming the nation’s Number 1 Killer of Women.
A special highlight of the program was a two-person performance of “Angina Monologues,” which combined humor and pathos to illustrate the affect of heart disease on women and the people who love them. This presentation was made possible through the efforts of “Events of the Heart,” a non-profit organization dedicated to using the creative arts to have women stand together and receive education, awareness and screenings.
During her closing remarks, Jennifer Mieres, MD, senior vice president of North Shore-LIJ’s Office of Community and Public Health, urged the women in the audience to follow some simple steps to stave off heart disease. “We know that 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented by changing our habits and reducing our risks,” she said. “Take small steps: watch your diet, try to get seven hours of sleep, and most importantly, take 10 minutes for yourself everyday and remember to laugh.”
