Manhasset North Shore-LIJ Lions Club Raises $43K for Diabetes Education, Screenings
November 15, 2013
MANHASSET, NY – The Manhasset North Shore-LIJ Lions Club raised more than $43,000 at a fundraising casino night event held last Friday at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset. The money raised will go toward diabetes screenings and education in local communities throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.
“It is critical that people get screened for diabetes as so many people are living with pre-diabetes or diabetes and don’t even know it,” said Marie Frazzitta, DNP, director of diabetes education for the North Shore-LIJ Health System and president of the Manhasset North Shore-LIJ Lions Club. “We look forward to further educating our communities about diabetes.”
According to the American Diabetes Association, 18.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes and seven million people have not yet been diagnosed with the disease but have it.
Approximately 160 people attended the fundraising event, which also honored the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Project Coastal Care team. Project Coastal Care was a mobile van where health system employees provided medical care to people affected by Hurricane Sandy. The van’s personnel were able to provide vaccinations for the flu and tetanus as well as treatment for a range of injuries and illnesses. All of these services were provided for approximately nine months after Hurricane Sandy free of charge.
Members of the Michael Magro Foundation, which focuses on childhood cancer and those affected by it, were also honored at the event. The Michael Magro Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, was established in January 2005 to honor Michael’s life. The mission of the foundation started by helping pediatric cancer patients and their families at local hospitals and has expanded to other pediatric specialty practices where treatment continues.
The Manhasset North Shore-LIJ Lions Club, which started nearly two years ago, has made diabetes prevention and treatment its number one priority.
