Mondays at Racine: A Collaboration of Community and the North Shore-LIJ Health System
October 14, 2013
The Oscar nominated documentary, Mondays at Racine, debuts tonight on HBO. The film highlights the stories that walk through the salon’s door. The synergy created between the film, The North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute and Southside Hospital is an example of what can be accomplished when organizations get together for the benefit of their community.
The North Shore-LIJ Health System was honored to be at the recent HBO screening of the documentary, held at the Islip Movie Theater, and reception at The Scully Estate in Islip. The event celebrated how sisters Cynthia Sansone and Rachael Demolfetto had the determination to “Pay It Forward” at their salon to offer a comfortable place for those undergoing cancer treatments in a way that celebrates human dignity.
Mondays at Racine has woven a fabric of friendship for many cancer patients. These extraordinary women have touched hundreds of lives, not with needles or lasers, but with compassion, understanding and laughter. Their salon has become a “support group” in disguise said Donna Moravick, executive director of Southside Hospital .
And, for those times when clinical realities have to intrude, patients can turn to the North Shore-LIJ Health System, which is committed to medical excellence and patient-centered care focused on human dignity. North Shore is collaborating with Racine in its efforts to help men and women with cancer. North Shore-LIJ specialists host “HealthTalks” at the salon and lead discussions on various health topics. The North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute and Southside Hospital is working with Racine to expand the program’s reach across Long Island.
The film premieres tonight on HBO at 9pm.
