North Shore-LIJ Awarded $3.8M Grant to Open Occupational Medicine Clinics on Long Island
April 9, 2013
GREAT NECK, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it will be opening two occupational medicine clinics in Nassau and Suffolk counties this summer with the help of a $3.8 million, five-year grant from the New York State Department of Health. The clinics, which will be available for people with work-related illnesses and injuries, will be located in New Hyde Park and St. James.
The clinics will offer services such as annual flu vaccines, asbestos screenings, assessments of employees’ readiness to return to work following an injury or illness, pre-employment evaluations, mental health services to help workers avoid burnout, and programs for day laborers and migrant workers. In addition, there will also be education initiatives offered at both clinics as well as at Long Island workplaces covering areas such as tobacco cessation, exercise, nutrition, safety awareness and identification of hazards, including asbestos.
“This grant will expand our ability to serve the workforce,” said Jacqueline Moline, MD , vice president and chair of population health at North Shore-LIJ. “We really put the strength of the health system in all of our endeavors. We can provide access to this specialized kind of care with far greater offerings through this grant.”
Without dedicated occupational medicine clinics, patients often go to emergency rooms and sometimes are treated improperly for their condition; their ailments also can be misidentified when a person’s environment is not factored into their diagnosis. These specialized workplace-related clinics also help employers provide additional, supplemental care for their workers.
For the past 25 years, the state provided funding to Stony Brook University Hospital to operate the occupational medicine clinics on Long Island.
