North Shore-LIJ to Help Local Restaurants Prepare Diabetes-Conscious Meals

November 7, 2012

In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month in November, the North Shore-LIJ Health System will offer guidance to local restaurants on how to prepare diabetes-conscious meals.  The restaurant challenge will take place throughout Nassau County and Queens. Restaurant chefs will work with a registered dietician to create meals that are diabetes friendly. Participating restaurants include: Colbeh in Great Neck, Jordan’s Lobster House in Island Park, Au Bon Pain in Manhasset, Jean Marie Patisserie & Bistro in Greak Neck, Carle Place Diner in Carle Place, La Nonna Bella in Garden City, George Martins in Rockville Centre, Henrica’s in Rosedale and the Galleria Ristorante in Westbury.

“We have a real focus on preventing diabetes,” said Marie Frazzitta, FNP-c DNP, CDE, MBA, director of diabetes education for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Diabetes lives in the community, so it’s particularly important that we partner with the community to help eradicate this disease.”

Diners can participate in this restaurant challenge by voting for their favorite diabetes-friendly fare and will be eligible for prizes for doing so. Prizes will also be given to the servers at the restaurants who sell the most diabetes-conscious meals as well as an award to the restaurant who receives the most votes.  This restaurant challenge is being supported by the Manhasset North Shore-LIJ Lions Club and the Michael Magro Foundation.

World Diabetes Day is November 14 and in an effort to raise awareness about diabetes the Manhasset North Shore-LIJ Lions Club and the North Shore-LIJ Diabetes Wellness Programs are partnering to create awareness circles.  Circles and the color blue are the symbols for diabetes awareness. People are being asked to gather to form circles at local schools, places of employment or other public places.  The goal is for all groups to simultaneously form a circle on November 14 at noon.  Participants will say the diabetes prevention pledge together and receive diabetes educational information. If you are interested in becoming a circle captain to help organize this event in your local area, please email diabeteswellness@nshs.edu

“Seven million people have diabetes and do not realize it,” said Tracy Breen, MD, director for diabetes at the North Shore LIJ Health System.  “It is vitally important that we offer programs to support people in identifying that they have diabetes as the first step towards treatment.”

Approximately 25.8 million adults and children in the U.S. have diabetes; an additional 79 million people are in the pre-diabetes stage.
