Betting Big on The Run For The Triple Crown
June 6, 2014
Don’t let betting on the big game take control, the National Council on Problem Gambling urged before the Super Bowl, and the same holds true for the big race at Belmont warns Harshal Kirane, MD, an addiction psychiatrist at North Shore-LIJ’s Staten Island University Hospital.
The Belmont Stakes presents a challenge for people suffering from gambling disorder, a condition now described as a medical, treatable disorder, according to Dr. Kirane.
“Recent biological research findings led the American Psychiatric Association to re-classify problem gambling as a behavioral addiction, not the impulse control issue it was once thought to be,” Dr. Kirane says. “It’s now believed to share links with other addictions and substance abuse.”
