The elective begins as a tutorial relationship with a member of the attending staff. As the student gains insight into the important physiologic parameters used in Cardiothoracic Surgery, he/she will function progressively as a member of the Divisional team, which consists of two thoracic surgery Residents, three general surgery Residents, seven physician's assistants, one nurse practitioner and two nurse clinicians.
Attendance is expected at daily Cardiology-Cardiac Surgery rounds where attending and Resident staff review and plan patient care. Additionally, weekly Grand Rounds plus lectures in Cardiothoracic Surgery (Tuesdays and Thursdays) are offered.
Three heart operations are scheduled daily; the student will have a broad exposure to the surgical treatment of valvular, ischemic and congenital heart disease and will gain experience in the management of perioperative hemo dynamic and pulmonary problems.
