Continuing Medical Education

North Shore-LIJ Health System is a leading not-for-profit provider of quality medical care. The continuing medical education (CME) provided to members of its medical staff, physicians in the region and other physicians throughout the United States and the world is a fundamental asset to the maintenance of quality and patient safety.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. ACCME-accredited providers certify educational activities for category 1 credit of the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award (“AMA/PRA”). The AMA/PRA is utilized by state licensing boards and boards of medical specialties to re-license physicians and re-certify them in their areas of specialty.

Learners that utilize the NS-LIJ CME program include the following:

  • Local audiences comprised of physicians from the System’s affiliated hospitals
  • Other physicians in the Long Island and greater metropolitan New York City region
  • Physicians from the United States and other countries in the world
  • Other Health Care Professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team

Accreditation With Commendation

On December 12, 2013, North Shore-LIJ Health System was again awarded “Accreditation with Commendation" as a provider of Continuing Medical Education by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. This is the second time that CME has achieved this distinction, establishing the program in the top tier of all CME providers including some of the nation’s most prestigious medical schools.

The Accreditation with Commendation award status grants North Shore-LIJ a six year accreditation (the maximum possible) and positions it among the top providers of continuing medical education in the United States. To be considered Exemplary, a program must go well beyond simply meeting the basic requirements by showing innovation and creativity in addressing the components that make up the ACCME’s Essential areas and Standards. This ranks North Shore-LIJ in the top 8% of all providers of CME in the nation and places it among those medical institutions in the US that have demonstrated the highest levels of educational acumen.
