Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

  • 16 Pathology Resident positions – 4 in each of the PGY levels - in our 4 year integrated training program in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP).
  • 1 fellowship in the following sub-specialties:
    • Cytopathology
    •  Hematopathology
    • Blood Bank
  • Rotations in subspecialty areas including:
    • Cytopathology
    • Infectious Disease Diagnostics
    • Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine
    • Hematology and Flow Cytometry
    • Clinical Chemistry
    • Immunology
    • Toxicology
    • Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology
  • The integrated Anatomic Pathology Services of North Shore LIJ Health System - which includes North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and NSLIJ Laboratories – In 2011:
    • Accessioned >80,000 surgical pathology cases and >130,000 cytology specimens
    • Conducted 236 autopsies (166 adult/pediatric and 70 perinatal). 
    • Performed over 11 million clinical laboratory tests - 60% of which represented outreach clients.

The residency program offers:

  • Training in laboratory management for both the academic and private sector environ­ment including training in medical directorship, quality management, utilization, instru­menta­tion, and informa­tion systems. 
  • Clinical or transla­tional scholarship in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology, or for collaboration with the basic and translational research of the Feinstein Institute.
