The Geriatric Fellowship program of the North Shore-LIJ Health System is the oldest geriatric training program in the U.S. Started in 1975 by Dr. Leslie Libow, the program has graduated over 200 geriatric fellows who have become academic leaders in Geriatric Medicine.
The one-year geriatric fellowship program emphasizes excellence in geriatric patient care in a variety of clinical settings, from hospital to out-patient community centers, including faculty practice, assisted living and senior citizen groups. Fellows are mentored throughout the interdisciplinary continuum of geriatric care, from acute hospital care to palliative and hospice services. Close interactions with other fellowship programs, in particular, the Zucker-Hillside Geropsychiatry and the NSLIJ Palliative Care fellowship, have been developed for better understanding of the complexity of health care delivery in older adults.
The geriatric fellows provide both primary care and consultation services for elderly patients in acute, ambulatory, community, long-term care settings and the hospice program in order to better understand the interaction of natural aging and disease, as well as the techniques of assessment, therapy and management. Additionally, geriatric fellows care for healthy older persons, who require primarily preventive health-care measures in the NSLIJ Faculty Practice, located at 2800 Marcus Avenue, Lake Success, NY.
The program includes an emphasis on the physiology of aging, the pathophysiology that commonly occurs in older persons, atypical presentations of illnesses, functional assessment, cognitive status and affective assessment and concepts of treatment and management in both the acute and long-term care settings, as well as in the community and in the home, through home care and hospice programs. Behavioral aspects of illness, socioeconomic factors and ethical and legal considerations that may impinge on medical management are included in the curriculum.
