Director, Medical Student Education:

Miriam A. Smith, MD

Medical Student Coordinator:

Marie Ilagan

Introduction to Medicine Course Director:

Ruchika Harasinghani, MD
Corey Karlin, MD

Long Island Jewish Medical Center is the Long Island campus of The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is responsible for the physical diagnosis section of the "Introduction To Medicine" course for second-year medical students. Students spend one afternoon per week at the medical center. Each student is assigned to an in-patient on whom to take a history and perform a physical examination. The students then present the patient to the preceptor who goes over the findings with them. The goal of this course is to develop communication and physical exam skills.

Third-Year Medicine Clerkship

Course Director:

Miriam A. Smith, MD

Long Island Jewish Medical Center is responsible for the third-year clerkship in internal medicine, which is a split clerkship with Jacobi Medical Center. Students are assigned to house staff teams and participate in all conferences and rounds. They have bi-weekly preceptor sessions and weekly didactic sessions on a variety of topics. One week of each clerkship is devoted to cardio-pulmonary skills. Students are evaluated by both the house staff and faculty. Because Long Island Jewish Medical Center is located on the Queens-Nassau County border, the students learn internal medicine in a busy, dynamic and ethnically diverse setting.

Fourth-Year Subinternship in Medicine

Course Director:

Ilene Friedman, MD

The fourth-year subinternship in Internal Medicine is a split block between Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Jacobi Medical Center. During this rotation students participate fully in the team management of patients admitted to the hospital. They are supervised by the team resident and by a senior internist from the LIJMC faculty. They have weekly didactic sessions with one of the course directors and weekly bedside clinical skills sessions with an experienced internist.
