Maternal and Fetal Medicine Fellowship

Message From Program Director

It gives us great pleasure to welcome you and to provide you with information about our graduate training program. One of the most important decisions in your professional and personal life is choosing a training program to foster your career goals. We are pleased and excited to tell you about our training program and trust that it will fulfill the needs of young physicians interested in pursuing an intellectually and stimulating career in maternal fetal medicine.

It is the goal of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine of the North Shore-LIJ Health System to train fellows for careers in academic medicine and in the skills necessary to function as independent consultants in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. These goals are achieved through a series of didactic lectures andconferences, extensive clinical experience and a broad range of clinical and basic science research opportunities. Fellows will become adept at procedures integral to the practice of Maternal-Metal Medicine, including targeted ultrasound, chorionic villlus sampling, fetal echocardiography, cordocentesis and fetal transfusion.

The System, through its affiliate hospitals, is responsible for approximately 22,000 deliveries annually, with 11,000 at the two tertiary centers. At each tertiary institution yearly, there are over 80 maternal transports, and at each site over 15,000 obstetrical ultrasounds are performed. Electives are offered in genetics, intensive care, obstetrical anesthesia and neonatology (at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York, a tertiary care, 154-bed children's medical center).

Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue scholarly research under the tutelage of mentors experienced in clinical or basic science research, available on campus at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The Institute ranks in the top 6% of independent research institutions funded by the National Institutes of Health. For those interested in further training in basic science research, there is availability for the pursuit of a PhD.

We believe our program provides a unique blend of extraordinary clinical and research opportunities. Located in a beautiful area to live and work in, it is in close proximity to New York City. We look forward to having you visit us and working with you on fulfilling your goals.

Sincerely,
