Nursing Leadership Basics
After completing the class the participants will be able to:
- Identify the vision, mission and philosophy of the NSLIJHS
- Identify resources available to the nurse leader
- Identify leadership skills needed to perform in the nurse leader role
- Validate role transition
- Apply the principles of Evidenced Based Practice
This four day (eight hour sessions: 8am-4pm) interactive program is designed to orient nurse leaders and equip them with knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively perform in their role. The participants will have the opportunity to learn from NSLIJHS leaders regarding the vision, mission, philosophy, and other leadership topics.
Topics include but not limited to are: Professional Nursing Practice at NSLIJHS, the Healthcare Marketplace, Evidenced Based Practice, Leadership Theory, Creative Management Strategies, Clinical Excellence, Performance Improvement, Transparency in Health Care, Patent Experience: Using Press Ganey, Transforming and Empowering Staff, Talent Acquisition, Competency Management, Staffing and Scheduling, Managing Financial Performance, Ancillary Support Services Effective Communication and Feedback, Conflict Resolution, and Problem Solving Skill.
Participants will be able to network with peers and pave the way for future collaborations and validation in their own role transition and other endeavors. The program is organized to meet the needs of entry level managers, middle managers, department heads, and nurse executives.
The program will culminate in a mini problem solving project intended to strengthen individual problem solving and decision making skills. The problem for the project will be selected by the participant and the Chief Nurse Executive of the participant’s facility. The problem solving model will enable the nurse leader to apply the principles of Evidence Based Practice, and knowledge gained in the course under the guidance of the course faculty.
