Pediatric Rheumatology Elective at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York

The elective program provides the student with experience in the comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services provided for patients with Rheumatologic diseases. These include such diversified problems as Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, Scleroderma, Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Henoch-Schönlein Purpura, Kawasaki Disease, Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease. The student will learn how to interpret tests of autoimmunity. The experience will include care of inpatients and outpatients with rheumatologic disorders. The outpatient experience includes three clinics weekly. During these clinics the student will learn about the operations of the multidisciplinary team consisting of a Pediatric Rheumatologist, nurse-clinician, and physical therapist, coordinated to deliver comprehensive care to the child and his/her family.
