The Genitourinary (GU) Pathology Division of the Department of Pathology at North Shore-LIJ Health System provides expert surgical pathology diagnoses related to disorders of urologic organs. Genitourinary Pathology deals with biopsies taken by urologists and radiologists as well as resection specimens taken by urologists. Biopsies and resections specimens include prostate, bladder, ureter, kidney and testis. These are examined for inflammatory and neoplastic conditions by experts in GU pathology.
The Genitourinary Pathology Division of North Shore-LIJ has special expertise in the diagnosis of urologic disorders such as prostate and bladder cancer, as well as renal and testicular diseases. We accept biopsies from private doctors’ offices and provide a rapid diagnosis, which is personally communicated in complex cases or instances of cancer. Outside biopsies are frequently sent to our division for a second opinion. We provide valuable support to pathologists and physicians in the form of second opinions. Our expert evaluation can provide a more accurate grading of malignancies which enables clinicians to treat their patients more effectively.
Results are available within 24 to 48 hours from the time each case is received. Reports are sent by courier or mail, fax or electronic submission, as requested. When requested, our experts will discuss the results and recommendations for treatment management with physicians and patients. Slides sent for consultation are returned automatically to contributors within two weeks.
Interpretations of urological pathology specimens are provided by experienced specialists.
Standard Specimen Processing
The laboratory provides expert evaluation of urological pathology specimens, using light microscopy with immunohistochemistry and/or cytogenetics, as appropriate for each case. Studies can be done on tissue or on blocks of tissue prepared elsewhere, and we offer second-opinion consultations.
