If you are newly diagnosed or experiencing a recurrent diagnosis, we understand the anxiety and challenges you may be facing. As a patient of the only specialized head and neck cancer facility in Long Island, you are in experienced hands. Our comprehensive team approach ensures not only the best care for your head and neck cancer, but also a complete understanding of your emotional, physical and spiritual needs as we undergo this journey together.
As a first step, each patient is met by key members of the multidisciplinary treatment team. This initial evaluation, along with imaging and laboratory work, allows our clinicians to quickly coordinate and develop a treatment plan that covers all aspects of care.
For the comfort of our patients and to keep them from having to travel all over town from specialist to specialist, our clinicians conduct the initial evaluation in a single office setting, easing anxiety, physical stress and transportation concerns. Most evaluations are completed in a single day or within a week if a second appointment is needed.
Within a few days of referral, each patient is given a definitive course of treatment and supportive care. Patients leave the office with treatment recommendations, a plan and personalized educational materials, including contact numbers and follow-up appointment times with specific team members, including:
- Radiation Medicine
- Medical Oncology
- Speech Pathology
- Head and Neck Radiology
- Social Work
- Nutrition Services
- Other specialists, as appropriate
Orientation, Education and Support
All patients receive an orientation and one-on-one educational/social support session. These are reviewed by the multidisciplinary care team to make sure each patient’s specific needs are being met, including potential eligibility for participation in clinical trials.
Treatment and Surveillance
Depending on the patient’s treatment needs, services are performed by each participating department. However, weekly multidisciplinary team meetings by our experts ensure overall coordination of each phase of the patient’s treatment.
This weekly review is designed to make sure each patient reaches treatment milestones, including:
- Timely start of treatment and supportive care
- Review for eligibility in clinical trials
- Aggressive supportive care interventions, if necessary, such as feeding tube placement, speech pathology, pain management, psycho-social consultations
- Successful completion of all necessary therapy
- Scheduling of post-treatment supportive care, surveillance follow-up and testing.
