Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is the place where patients who have had surgical procedures and anesthesia are temporarily admitted. The PACU at North Shore-LIJ is staffed by specially trained nurses and experienced anesthesiologists -- some of whom have additional training in critical care – as well as support staff that is present around the clock to address the needs of the recovering patient.

The responsibilities of the PACU team members include pain management, treatment of post-operative nausea and vomiting and cardiovascular and respiratory monitoring and treatment. Their goal is to ensure a comfortable and safe post-operative experience for all patients and to transition them to their next destination as seamlessly as possible, whether it’s to a hospital floor, intensive care unit (ICU) or home.

The visitation policy in the PACU is designed so that loved ones are able to participate in the recovery of patients by being at their bedside for comfort and support. Please refer to the individual hospital’s PACU visitation policy for more information.
