Radiation Medicine

Why Patients Choose the North Shore-LIJ
Department of Radiation Medicine

Our Department of Radiation Medicine not only strives to provide state-of-the-art care, but also is at the forefront of advances in diagnosing and treating cancer. Our specialists employ innovative radiation procedures to target malignancies while at the same time reducing the rest of the body's exposure to radiation.

Patients choose North Shore-LIJ's Department of Radiation Medicine for:

  • The Latest Advancements in Radiation Treatment
The Department of Radiation Medicine offers a wide range of cutting-edge therapies and treatments. For example, the Calypso System for treating prostate cancer uses a technology similar to GPS to accurately direct radiation.

Our system recently introduced the Center for Stereotactic Radiation at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Stereotactic radiation therapy is known as radiosurgery, but it is actually a state-of-the-art nonsurgical way to deliver high doses of radiation therapy to a small target area. This helps protect surrounding tissue while targeting cancerous cells.

  • Pioneering Radiation Treatments Through Clinical Trials
The Department of Radiation Medicine is dedicated to advancing the treatment of cancer through innovative and safe radiation procedures. As such, its work includes clinical trials to break ground on new, life-saving therapies. Recent work includes clinical trials in brain, breast, head and neck and prostate cancer.

  • Comprehensive Support Services for Patients and Their Families
Undergoing radiation treatment is a major medical undertaking and a stressful time for patients and their families. To support total recovery, the Department of Radiation Medicine provides access to support groups, individual and group counseling, nutritional support and referrals to other wellness programs.
