The Renal Pathology service in the Department of Pathology at North Shore-LIJ Health System provides comprehensive studies and interpretation of kidney biopsies for native kidney diseases and renal transplant pathology. The renal pathologists are part of medical team that manages patients with kidney diseases. We work closely with nephrologists and transplant surgeons.
Besides providing clinical diagnosis, the Renal Pathology service also administers education to pathology residents and nephrology fellows. We are also interested and participate in clinical research related to native kidney diseases and renal transplant pathology.
The Renal Pathology Service is staffed with fellowship-trained renal pathologists. Our light microscopic studies include H&E, Jones, Trichrome and PAS staining in level sections. Immunofluorescence (IF) microscopic studies include IgG, IgA, IgM, C3, C1q, fibrinogen, albumin, kappa and lambda light chains and C4d. We also routinely perform electron microscopic (EM) studies with digitized images. Other studies such as Congo red and immunohistochemical stains are also available upon each individual case.
The preliminary results will be communicated with the clinical team within one day after receiving the specimen. Full report will follow after reviewing IF and EM results.
