The Thoracic Pathology Service in the Department of Pathology at North Shore-LIJ Health System provides a comprehensive diagnostic service of all aspects of thoracic pathology which covers both neoplastic and non-neoplastic lung disease and pleura and mediastinum diseases. This includes the rapid interpretation of biopsies, as well as large surgical oncology cases. The Thoracic Pathology Service works very closely with the medical pulmonary clinicians and the thoracic oncology surgical and medical services.
Lung disease refers to many disorders affecting the lungs, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, infections like influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, lung cancer and many other breathing problems. According the American Lung Association, lung disease is America's number-three killer and is responsible for one in six deaths.
Dr. Michael Esposito is the service director of thoracic pathology and has 19 years of experience in this field. He is an active participant in the Weekly Multidisciplinary Lung Tumor Board and has been involved in the education of pulmonary fellows and clinicians for the past 10 years. His main areas of interest involve pulmonary neoplasms, especially the molecular genetics of lung cancer, as well as diffuse interstitial lung disease.
