Arterial stents are tiny expandable metal coils that are inserted into a newly opened area of an artery to help keep the artery from narrowing or closing again. Stents are often placed during a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) which is performed to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease.
