Surgical Oncology Procedures
Surgical oncology treatments include all open and minimally invasive surgical procedures used to treat cancer. Treatment of cancer typically involves a team consisting of medical oncology and radiation oncology. Advanced surgical oncology treatment options include:
- Microvascular techniques — Involves detaching and reattaching skin and blood vessels from one site of the body to another site.
- Cryosurgery — Use of liquid nitrogen, or a probe that is very cold, to freeze and kill cancer cells.
- Radiofrequency ablation — Use of high frequency electrical currents to destroy cancer cells.
- Minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic and robotically assisted techniques — use of a viewing tube with a lens or camera inserted through a small incision in the abdomen to examine organs and remove tissue.
