Free Mammograms and Other Cancer Screenings For Breast Cancer Awareness Month
NEW HYDE PARK, NY – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, LIJ Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care Unit is urging women to get their regularly-scheduled mammogram and other cancer screenings.
Free, state-of-the-art 3D mammograms are available to women between the ages of 50 and 64 who are uninsured or underinsured and have not had a mammogram in at least a year. These 3D screenings produce a clearer picture than standard mammograms because they look at each layer of breast tissue one at a time, which can help reduce false alarms that can come from overlapping tissue. Screenings are available on weekdays and Saturdays by appointment only.
The mammograms are provided at the Schlanger, Gottlieb, Partners Council Breast Imaging Center, located at North Shore-LIJ’s Center for Advanced Medicine at 450 Lakeville Road, Lake Success, located across from the main entrance to LIJ Medical Center. Mammograms are done after a clinical breast exam is performed at the Ambulatory Care Unit at LIJ Medical Center. Clinicians at LIJ Medical Center also offer pelvic exams, pap smears and colon cancer screenings.
Studies show that women who lack health insurance are less likely to get screened for cancer and more likely to be diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease. The Center encourages all women with an average risk for breast cancer to begin getting a mammogram at the age of 40.
“Early detection is one of the main ways we save lives,” said Kaitlin Doyle, MSPH, Women’s Health Coordinator at LIJ Medical Center. “Regular screenings allow us to identify symptoms early, and patients achieve a better clinical result if treatment can begin sooner. These screenings also ease women’s minds to know what their health status is and know there is treatment available if needed regardless of insurance or citizenship status.”
The screening program is funded through the New York State Cancer Services Program of Eastern Queens and Nassau County through a grant from the state Department of Health. LIJ also receives support regarding transportation services from the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
To reserve an appointment for a free cancer screening, call the LIJ Ambulatory Care Unit at 718-470-4165. Screenings will be held at LIJ Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care Unit, First Floor, Research Building, 270-05 76th Avenue, New Hyde Park. The hospital is accessible by public transportation; parking is available in the visitor’s garage.
For those who need cancer treatment, the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute is one of the largest cancer centers in the metropolitan New York area. The institute offers, when appropriate, robotic-aided assistance for minimally-invasive surgeries and investigational medications, therapies and treatments.
