Next week begins New York Women's Health week, encouraging women to make their health a top priority. The North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System has joined the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to offer various free clinics all week. Dr. Netta Shah, Vice President of Women's Health Services at North Shore LIJ joined us with details.
What is Women's Health?
Women's health is about the whole woman. As women, we take care of everyone around us, so it is important for women to have the knowledge to make enlightened health care choices for herself and her family.
What is Women's Health Institute?
This is a virtual hospital with resources to empower women to take charge of their health, so that they will be able to take care of their family. WHI was launched last year to create a single place where women can turn when they're concerned about their own health, caring for an aging parent, finding the right pediatrician for a child or getting a husband to a doctor.
Women's Health Week and Checkup Day - As part of its designation as the "New York Women's Checkup Pledge Center," North Shore-LIJ has established an online resource center that encourages women to make their health a top priority, and take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life. As a first step, women should to "take the pledge" and make a personal commitment to get a checkup within 90 days. A printable pledge certificate is available for download as a reminder of the commitment. The web site features health and screening information, upcoming events and resource information, including referral numbers to find a physician and help those who lack health insurance get access to care. Our goal is to have thousands of women pledge.
