Overview

Since its inception, the Division of Corporate Security & Emergency Management at North Shore-LIJ Health System has been responsible for maintaining the safety of patients, employees and all North Shore-LIJ Health System entities. The Emergency Management department routinely works with state, federal and local agencies, as well as not-for-profit organizations and private companies to train health care and emergency services technicians in a variety of emergency management programs.

Corporate security

North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Corporate Security department provides the health system and its employees with an on call security team around the clock. Our team utilizes the latest innovations in law enforcement and protective services to implement a comprehensive program focused on mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Under the Corporate Security umbrella, we provide the following services:

  • Protection for physical assets
  • Secure facilities for human assets
  • Oversee general security and special event security throughout the health system
  • Transportation and fleet services
  • Investigations
  • Executive protection
  • Crime prevention

Emergency management

Emergency Management is a shared service between all health system campuses. The Emergency Management team is responsible for disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs to ensure North Shore-LIJ’s standards of service and quality care are maintained during any kind of disaster.

Mitigation

North Shore-LIJ Health System Emergency Management team works hard to eliminate or reduce the chance of a disaster emergency occurring within a system facility, or reduce the damaging effects of unavoidable emergencies.

Preparedness

The Emergency Management team prepares for any emergencies that may arise. This includes plans or preparations to save lives and help response and rescue operations as well as stocking resources to support the system in case of an emergency.

Response

The Emergency Management team responds safely to a disaster with activities designed to provide emergency assistance to facilities, patients, or the community to reduce the likelihood of further impact from the event.

Recovery

The Emergency Management team works with facilities throughout the health system to return to normal operating activities following an emergency.

Emergency Operations Center

The North Shore-LIJ Emergency Operations Center is the central coordination facility for all disasters within the health system. It is also where emergency training is planned and conducted. Our Emergency Operations Center is used by federal, state and local emergency agencies during severe weather, national incidents, and for local events. This facility is responsible for the safety of patients and the 48,000 North Shore-LIJ employees throughout health systems 17 hospitals and myriad facilities.
